The Darkest Month of The Year

At the beginning of 2019 the Bluebelle Bistro—one of Kaslo’s celebrated restaurants and music venues—hosted the first annual live music series, “The Darkest Month of the Year”. These events have been a great success and Rooted Radio was lucky enough to be there to plug into the back of their mixer to livestream and record most of them for you.

Over the next week, Rooted Radio will be releasing each set for you to listen to so you can relive the great live experiences they each were.

The Year of the Wolf and Small Town Artillery

The first show we were able to setup for was The Year of the Wolf and Small Town Artillery as part of their “Hunt for the Sasquatch” tour. Although these are two Vancouver bands, Small Town Artillery is lead by the Kaslo raised Van Deursen boys, Tom and Derek, and their show was a celebration of their mother Lynn’s birthday.

For this particular event, we were blessed by the fact that these bands brought an arsenal of gear and a sound guy to make it all sound oh so very good. Here are their sets :

Turkey Soup Band and Mike Meaney

The next show was the Turkey Soup Band (aka Ali Kane & Yvonne Boyd), with an opener playing his premiere show outside of Nelson, Mike Meaney. Unfortunately we had a technical glitch and the show was not fully recorded. We did manage to salvage a sample of Mike Meaney’s opening set, however. So hear that is:

The Block Heaters and Craig Walter

The third show Rooted Radio live streamed was a new local collaboration called The Block Heaters, and Craig Walter of The Hilties came from Nelson to open for them.
